The 10 questions and answers about salt chlorination

Salt electrolysis is a simple principle similar to the behavior of the sea and its ecosystem.

A Salt Water Chlorinator works by breaking down the salt (sodium chloride) into chlorine and sodium, this way it generates naturally the needed chlorine

Thanks to the saline electrolysis we achieve a more efficient disinfection of the water of our swimming pool, due to the combined action of the chlorine and other agents that are generated during the electrolysis (active oxygen) and the own oxidation of the organic matter present in the water on the electrodes.

1.- Is the saline electrolysis valid for any type of swimming pool?

Yes, and not only for swimming pools, also for spas, wellness centers, lakes, fountains…. Meaning that the saline electrolysis is valid for any place in which there is a need to chlorinate the water.

2.- What is the cost to install a Sal water Chlorinator?

First of all, we have to determine certain parameters such as the size of the swimming pool, the hardness of the water of the area, the number of people who will use the pool, etc… But as reference, a particular with a private standard swimming pool of 8×4 will have to realize an initial investment of approximately 1.000 Euros for the Salt Water Chlorinator. From that moment, this particular will not need to purchase, transport or store chlorine, and of course the maintenance is simpler. It is proven that Salt Water Chlorinators permit a saving of the 80% in maintenance and a 100% in Chemical products.

3.- Is it easy to install a Salt Water Chlorinator? Do you need to realize a lot of Works?

No. The saline electrolysis is an easy system to install which does not imply any work. We recommends you ask your usual installer for help, since you will only have to cut the jet mouth pipe to insert the Salt Water Chlorinator cell.

4.- Once the Salt Water Chlorinator is installed, what do I have to do?

The technology of the system of saline electrolysis is adapted so by itself, and taking advantage of the energy of the motor of the filtration equipment, it will produce automatically the necessary natural disinfection for each case and each swimming pool. There are many different types of equipment’s in the market for each case. It is an automatic system that only needs for you to control the balance of the PH (between 7,2 and 7,6).

5.- Why is saline water healthier?

Saline water is a soft natural antiseptic, which inhibits the formation of organisms in the water of your swimming pool. The sodium hypochlorite produced in this form has a great advantage, as indicated in the report nº17.24 of the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations (Instituto Eduardo Torroja), “Does not contain chlorine (dyes), nor isocyanides, highly harmful, which forces you to a close control in the dosage and in the residual concentration which are produced in the water by the pass of time”. Those elements cause the irritations in eyes, skin, ears and nostrils. Alterations in the hair, odors, etc… Also, in heated or closed pools, it is possible to eliminate the unpleasant smell in the environment

6.- Is it like swimming in the Ocean?

No, the salt is added to the water, but only in small concentrations.  The sea water has a salinity of approximately 35.000ppm of salt and Salt Water Chlorinators have 5.500 ppm, giving them a salinity similar to the tear of a human eye. The softly salty water is, in effect, more comfortable for swimmers than the sea water.

7.- Is the salt consumption very high?

Practically no, the reactions build a closed process in which there is practically no lost of any of the elements, since they are discomposed, act and are newly generated. This explains that the salt concentration stays constant. Nevertheless, some quantities of salt are lost with the cleaning of the filters and the excessive rains, for these reasons, the level of salt has to be checked regularly.

8.- Is the salt corrosive?

The water with a small salt concentration is not corrosive, therefore, the water which is treated with a Salt Water Chlorinator has no harmful effects. It is a great advantage over traditional chemical chlorine, which impurities can damage the surface of swimming pools. The salt concentration in the water does not affect also the main brands of filters and motors and have guaranties regarding this effect. It also does not affect the PVC plumbing.

9.- Does it require some type of maintenance?

Very little, since one of the advantages of this system is its automatism. Also, all the equipment’s include an automatic cleaning system of the electrodes.

10.- In moments of drought as in the actuality, does this Salt Water Chlorinator system contributes in some way?

Yes. And this is one of its principal advantages. The Salt electrolysis permits a great saving since the water can be maintained year by year with no need to empty the swimming pool.
